Our core business activities include Political/Economic work, Press and Public Affairs, Visa/Consular work, Management and Development through the local Department for International Development (DfID) office. We are also co-located with the British Council.

The work of the Embassy is guided by the provisions of the EU Common Position on Burma. Links to the Common Position of 2007, the latest amendment to the Common Position and the latest Commission Regulation are as follows:

The Ambassador is the United Kingdom's official representative, and provides the channel of communication between the government of the United Kingdom and the Burmese authorities.

Consular staff will do everything they properly can to help British people in difficulty in Rangoon.  In addition, key consular services include registering births and deaths.  Passport applications are accepted in Rangoon and processed through the British Embassy Bangkok. (Please see the Help for British Nationals page for more information). The visa section processes visa or entry clearance applications for people intending to visit, settle, work or study in the UK. See Visa Page for more information.

Information Section

The Information team is responsible for political and economic analysis, communication and British Embassy support to Grassroots Development Programme. The Embassy’s Bilateral Fund (BPF) supports a range of activities aimed at building capacity of Myanmar organisations, supporting the protection of vulnerable communities, promoting environmental conservation and strengthening community based development. We work with local and international non-government organisations (NGOs) and a number of civil society and community based organisations to deliver these projects.

Management Section

Management Section is responsible not only for our budget and the day-to-day running of the office, but also local pay and conditions of service.  Specialist colleagues provide IT and technical works support, both within the Embassy and on a regional basis.
